Life (and Love) After Stroke: Mike's Story

Day 3 – PEAK DAY BEGINS

April 14, 2025

Mike did well last night. Blood pressure is staying in the 130/80 range where they want it. The drip he was on has been lowered from 32 to 8, which they say is really good and he’s still maintaining that BP so great progress.

Neurosurgery saw him just now and with his multiple stable head CT scans, they have declared he is no longer at surgical risk and he’s been released to the neurology team to manage him.  That’s a huge relief.

Pain is unfortunately not completely resolved but he’s been comfortable and able to sleep.

Today is what they call the peak day to look for possible brain swelling. It may not happen but this is the timeframe after the incident where it could happen.

There are certain signs that they are looking for and can administer specific meds to counteract any possible swelling. Since I’ve been there every day sitting with him, they’ve told me what to look for as far as differences in his behavior between the last couple days and today and to alert them right away and they will get right on it. So that’s my number one job today.

A very exciting thing happened…when the technicians came to change his IV in his left arm (the affected side), HE COULD FEEL THE TAPE AND THE IV BEING PULLED OUT! He even retracted his left arm in response to the pain. Muscles are waking up!

The nurses reminded us that this will be a long, frustrating process. But that small glimmer of hope is all he needed. He immediately seems more relaxed.

I wore some body tattoos that I had made for Valentine’s Day this year for Mike. I got a big smile out of him when I showed him. 🙂
