Life (and Love) After Stroke: Mike's Story

  • April 19, 2025 To say Mike is doing well is an understatement. My love is kicking butt and taking names! He was the best he’s been this morning. His sons and his brother got to witness it. He ate and ate and ate. He chatted and made jokes. He requested hash browns with eggs and… Read more

  • April 18, 2025 So we are a full week now since Mike’s stroke. Mike had a restless night. Didn’t sleep at all. He’s experiencing hospital delirium. It’s common with some patients in his condition. As I and his kids have experienced when we visit, he will talk about going upstairs to lay down or asking… Read more

  • Day 6

April 17, 2025 Mike is still suffering quite significantly from head pain. The blood putting pressure on the brain along with the tissue damage is the reason. The doctor said they can’t give him any real pain medication for another three to possibly five days. It’s awful. He’s only sleeping about four hours at night… Read more

  • April 16, 2025 He had a restless night with head pain. Not great sleep. Neurosurgery saw him last night for the final time and they feel his well-oriented presentation and clinical stability over these last couple days indicates that the swelling is not significant enough to warrant acute intervention, meaning no surgery. • Day 2 – Palm Sunday

The nighttime nurse told me Mike had a good night. He was able to get some rest. Still, his pain is a 10/10. They tried a little bit of morphine to take the edge off but it doesn’t give him relief for very long. They approved small doses of tramadol more frequently to see if… Read more

  • Mike had a decent night considering. They closely monitored him throughout the night to make sure his blood pressure did not spike out of control and looked for any signs of his breathing being compromised. The blood on the brain needs time to resorb back into the body. Until it does, it will continue to… Read more

  • I hate navigating hospitals. It’s weird that you’re kind of left to your own devices to get to where you need to be. Sure, they direct you but in a large hospital like Albany Med, you can get disoriented quickly. Walking the halls, smelling certain smells and passing patient rooms, just knowing there’s sadness and… Read more

The Happily Never After “Hmm…why haven’t I heard from Mike yet?” That was my thought as I looked at the clock and saw it was about 3:30 pm. It was a Friday afternoon and getting close to the end of my workday. I was done with court and excited to get out of work and… Read more
