Life (and Love) After Stroke: Mike's Story

Our Last First Date

Mike and I had a wonderful weekend. Last Friday was his birthday and I threw him a party. All of his friends came out to see him and the weather was perfect. He was touched by the thoughtful celebration and it was nice for him to see friends he hasn’t seen in a while.

Sunday night, we went to see Blink 182 at SPAC. We had a wonderful time together. I treated us to VIP Club because he had bought expensive tickets before the stroke to sit inside which isn’t possible right now for us and so I wanted to make sure he was comfortable.

The weather was beautiful and we sat on the balcony of the VIP Club. Mike bought us matching Blink 182 shirts and I learned something new about him. His favorite song by Blink 182 is First Date. I just thought that was so adorable. 😍

(Look up the lyrics some time. It’s a cute and catchy song.)

So it inspired me to write a poem for him about our first date.

Enjoy!

***

I arrive early to Panchos and anxiously await

What I am hoping will be my last first date

Waiting in the parking lot, I eagerly study the cars as they arrive

But then I remember I never asked what type of car you drive

I fuss in the mirror with my makeup and hair

And hope you will like the outfit I chose to wear

Then, I pray, Oh, God, let this be what is meant for me. You always keep your promises in every way

And I believe that what is intended for me will not be taken away

I sit and fidget a bit, really hoping that this doesn’t fall through

Because I’ve got a good feeling this time, I really do

Our conversations have been effortless, our texts so light and fun

It’s all so exciting to think you may be the one

But not so fast, I remind myself, because it’s happened before

That once I meet someone in person, I can’t wait to get out the door

Either they’re two hundred pounds more than their photos show or ten years older than they say

And, even worse, no teeth in their mouth or shorter than me on a good day

Finally, a loud truck comes booming into a parking spot and a guy gets out who looks like pictures of you

Walking quickly towards the front door, you glance my way as I get out of my car, too

We both smile wide and simultaneously say

“Nice to meet you”, (and you’re tall with teeth, yay!)

Once we are seated in a booth, our attraction and perfect match is clear

Because it’s as if, suddenly, we are the only two people here

We talk for hours, we laugh and joke, we fall into a rhythm and flow

Until it occurs to me there’s nobody in the place, and I say, “I think we have to go”

The staff was polite, mopped and wiped tables down, letting us stay

But you could see relief on their faces when we finally got up to pay

Being my usual practice on a first date, I offered to split

But you said, “No, thanks, I got it”

As we head out to our cars, you walk me to mine. We extend a hand out at the same time

We laugh a little, then share our first kiss, our mouths perfectly positioned so as not to miss

You promise to call and I say, “Please do”.

I get back in my car, look up and whisper, “Thank you”

Driving home, I feel so light and free

With my windows down and the warm air washing over me

I know once I get home, I’m getting off the dating site, there’s no need to wait

For I feel it in my heart and deep in my soul that we both just had our last first date ❤️
