Life (and Love) After Stroke: Mike's Story

When Faith Screams

“Our faith is a living thing precisely because it walks hand in hand with doubt. If there was only certainty and if there was no doubt, there would be no mystery and, therefore, no need for faith.” – Conclave

I love a good mystery. Don’t we all? I think it’s fair to say that the biggest mystery in life is the existence of God.

I mean, can we say with 100 percent certainty that God exists? No.

But that’s where faith comes in!

We can say with 100 percent absolute certainty that we believe God exists.

Not only because we have faith, but it is also reasonable, logical and supported by facts.

Throughout my life and for as long as I can remember, the only thing that grounded me in life was my faith. Whenever something bad happened or was looming, I immediately turned to God. I knew that He would be there for me. He would listen and answer. It may not have always been what I wanted to hear, but He always responded.

***

That is a big word, faith. How do you describe faith to someone who doesn’t believe in God?

I’m sure it feels different for everyone. But for me, it is this quiet confidence that I carry inside of me. It’s there all the time. I have felt it my whole life. It is like a rock that I cling to. It’s there in good times and in bad.

I grew up thanking God every day for my parents and my sisters. I had a wonderful childhood and I knew it early on and was so grateful.

I felt extra lucky that God blessed me with a twin sister because it was like growing up with a built-in best friend. I can’t imagine life without her. She’s three minutes older and owns the big sister title. She wears it perfectly. I always have looked up to her, and still do.

The fact is you don’t need to be able to see God to believe in Him. If this were like a court case and we needed to investigate the truth of God’s existence, we would find the evidence overwhelming. It’s literally all around us. If you don’t see it, then you’re simply choosing not to.

Because the proof is everywhere we look. It’s in the beautiful landscape that is our entire world.

It is in our children laughing and playing.

It is in the many creatures and animals, big and small, that inhabit our planet.

It is in the skills we all possess to make a living and survive in life.

It is in the music we hear and the mountains we climb.

It is in the oceans we swim in and the beaches we comb.

It is in the people who bless our lives with their friendship and love.

It is looking up into the sky and seeing the sun, the moon and the stars.

It is in the known, uncontroverted fact that Jesus lived as one of us, then suffered and died as a human. All for us.

Every Sunday, Mike and I are approached by people at church, some that know us and others who we meet for the first time. It always impresses me how people go out of their way to introduce themselves to us and ask about Mike. We feel seen. We feel prayed for. We feel loved.

Faith is complete trust.

That you’re not alone.

That your prayers are being heard.

That God will not fail you.

If this were a court case, Mike would be an exhibit submitted into evidence of proof beyond a doubt of God’s existence.

Jaycee, the therapist, and Mike walking in his kitchen without assistive devices!

Any objection?

There being no objection, it is received in Evidence, on consent of all parties.
